PSV begins quest for fourth-straight league crown

PSV was crowned champions only because AZ Alkmaar suffered a shocking 3-2 loss to Excelsior, leaving the impression that AZ lost the title rather than PSV earned it.

Manager Ronald Koeman's side made a number of additions in the summer signing period that will add depth to the squad, but how many will become impact players remains to be seen. The team is sure to miss departed defender Alex, who left over the summer to sign with Chelsea as well as Philip Cocu. The Brazilian defender anchored PSV's back line last year while also providing the occasional spark offensively.

Outside of Alex, the team returns mostly intact with Gomes returning between the posts and strong defenders Jan Kromkamp, Carlos Salcido and Manuel Da Costa still on board.

Scoring goals should not be an issue at all for Koeman's men because the manager has a number of quality options up top including Jefferson Farfan, who led the team with 21 goals last season, Arouna Kone and Kenneth Perez.

The campaign begins for PSV on Sunday with an away contest at Heracles Almelo. Heracles finished 14th in the standings last season, narrowly avoiding the drop zone.

PSV should be able to handle Heracles without much trouble, but they will find it a little more difficult when it comes to the league's top title contenders, Ajax and AZ.

Neither side made any big additions over the summer, but both were right there in position on the final day of the season to claim the title.

It should be more of the same this year with those three teams battling it out at the top, but give PSV a slight edge because they have proven that they know how to win when it counts.

In Friday's contest, Heerenveen and Willem II played to a 0-0 draw.

On Saturday, NAC plays host to Groningen, title contenders AZ Alkmaar entertain promoted side Venlo, Twente tries to follow up a top-five finish last season with another strong campaign and visits Excelsior and Roda travels to De Goffert to meet NEC.

Also on Sunday, PSV's chief rival, Ajax, hits the road to meet promoted club De Graafschap, Feyenoord tries to put last season's poor performance behind it when the club travels to Utrecht and Sparta hosts Vitesse.

Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.

Two playoff teams from 2007 take center stage on the NFL Network Sunday night in a Week 2 NFL betting match-up when the (0-1) New England Patriots betting head south to Florida for a contest with the (1-0) Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

New England HC Bill Belichick couldn’t care less about the way his team plays in the preseason. With a chance to tie last week’s game with the Baltimore Ravens betting, He elected to go for the two-point conversion and outright victory. The conversion failed, and the Pats ended up falling to the Ravens by a 16-15 final count.

New England rolled off twelve unanswered points to give it a chance at securing the victory, but it never threatened to cover the 3.5-point spread. QB Tom Brady didn’t take part in the Patriots first preseason clash, but could see action this weekend.

Defensively, the Bucs recorded four sacks and held the Fins offense in check all day.

First round draft pick Aqib Talib was impressive in the secondary, recording a tackle and two pass defenses in his debut. Don’t be surprised to see Talib in the starting lineup opposite Ronde Barber for the Bucs in ’08.

The betting trends suggest that NFL bettors should be backing the Bucs in this intra-conference exhibition.
