02/26/2007 - St. Paul, MN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Pierre-Marc Bouchard had a goal and an assist as the Minnesota Wild defeated the Edmonton Oilers, 4-1, at Xcel Energy Center.
Todd White, Brent Burns and Marian Gaborik each tallied markers for the Wild, who have won three straight games and four of their last five.
Niklas Backstrom stopped 19-of-20 shots for Minnesota, which will travel to Calgary to play the Flames on Wednesday night.
Fernando Pisani scored the lone goal for the Oilers, who have lost five of their last seven contests and will host the Phoenix Coyotes of Tuesday.
Dwayne Roloson made 23 saves in defeat for Edmonton.
"Our best penalty killer was our goalie," Burns said. "He is playing great for us. If we get beat, we have the confidence that he will stop the puck."
After both teams played it close to the best in the early stages of the contest, the Wild finally got on the board with 1:39 left in the opening stanza. Following some good offensive pressure, Bouchard, standing along the right wing boards, found a wide open White in front of the Oilers net and redirected the pass past Roloson.
The game remained the same until the later stages of the second stanza. After some chippy play throughout the frame, the Wild struck again with 1:08 left and on the power play. Kim Johnsson got the puck over to Burns at the left point and took a soft wrist shot that appeared to hit an Edmonton player in front and got by Roloson to put Minnesota up 2-0 heading into the second intermission.
Edmonton was not about to go quietly as the Oilers came out in the third, putting the offensive pressure on the Wild. Pisani lit the lamp seven minutes in the stanza when the veteran right wing skated down the right side and took a wrist shot that got by Backstrom high to the stick side to cut the deficit to 2-1.
"We've got a lot of divisional games left, but this is desperate hockey now," Oilers left wing Ryan Smyth said. "We've got to still believe in ourselves. We've got to create our opportunities and once we get these opportunities, take full advantage of them."
Minnesota answered right back with a tally of its own just under a minute later however. The Wild caused a turnover in the Oilers' offensive zone, sending Pavol Demitra and Gaborik on a 2-on-1 break. After some back-and- forth passing, it was Gaborik that finished it off, getting the puck past Roloson got give the Wild a two-goal lead at 3-1.
The Wild played a solid defensive game the rest of the way and got an empty- net tally from Bouchard in the final minute of play to account for the final score.
Game Notes
The Oilers finished 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Wild were 1-for-2 with the man advantage.

The AFC South and the NFC East are the favorite divisions to have the next Super Bowl champ among them in the NFL betting odds. But more down to the point, these football odds are in favor of the Indianapolis Colts, by far the strongest team in the AFC South, and the Dallas Cowboys of the NFC East.
Most sports fans would agree that these two teams top the list to win it all before the season even begins. In the BetUS Sportsbook football futures, the Colts are +800 in the odds to win the Super Bowl, while the Cowboys are sitting at +1000 and the Super Bowl XLIV champions New Orleans Saints at +900. In the AFC South, the Colts won the division for five straight years after the 2002 realignment, before the Tennessee Titans won it in 2008. But the Colts came back strong in 2009 to win the division again en route to the Super Bowl. The Cowboys are the favorite to win the NFC East, as well as to advance far into the post season. The Cowboys won the division last season before their horrendous loss in the NFC Divisional playoff to Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. But the ‘Boys will take that loss humbly and be ready for the playoffs this time around.
The NFC South is also very strong, at +600 in the NFL futures, considering that it is home to the defending Super Bowl champions. However, some predictions have the Atlanta Falcons with possibilities of claiming the divisional title this season in place of the Saints, as no team has won back-to-back division championships since the division realignment took place. Let’s not overlook the AFC North at +500. As TO goes to Cincinnati to join Chad OchoCinco and Adam “Pac-Man” Jones, this team looks to claim the division title again. And it is likely they will do so. The Bengals lost in the AFC Wild Card spot in a hard-fought battle against the New York Jets last season. Lest not forget the Pittsburgh Steelers, the XLII Super Bowl Champions… All these teams present interesting odds and matchups for the upcoming season, but the safest and surest bet seems to be with the Colts in the AFC South and the Cowboys in the NFC East. Play this weekly NFL Football Contestto see if you can win.
