Hiller backs Ducks to win over Red Wings

01/06/2010 - Anaheim, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jonas Hiller was strong with 38 saves and four different Anaheim goal scorers led the offensive attack, as the Ducks defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 4-1, at Honda Center.

Saku Koivu, Matt Beleskey and Corey Perry scored key goals for Anaheim, which halted a three-game slide and will host the St. Louis Blues on Thursday. Kyle Chipchura added an empty-net tally in the victory.

Valtteri Filppula scored the lone goal for the Red Wings, who saw their brief two-game win streak snapped and are now 3-4-1 since a four-game win streak in mid-December. Jimmy Howard allowed three goals on 34 shots in the loss.

After Koivu's unassisted short-handed goal opened the scoring at the 5:37 mark of the first period, Beleskey's first NHL goal two minutes later gave the Ducks a two-goal edge.

Sheldon Brookbank's shot from the centerpoint missed the net and caromed off the rear boards. Beleskey alertly positioned himself near the left post and was in the right place at the right time -- he tapped the puck over the goal line with 12:22 remaining in the first period.

Following a scoreless middle session, the Red Wings cut their deficit in half at 11:03 of the third stanza on Filppula's third goal of 2009-10. A shot from the left point by Nick Lidstrom was stopped in front, but Filppula was in front near the goal mouth and he put home a backhander.

But with 6:31 to go in regulation, Perry's 17th goal gave the Ducks a bit of breathing room. A stuffer attempt by Ryan Getzlaf at the right post led to a battle for the loose puck in front. Perry swooped in and lit the lamp with a rebound from the inner rim of the lower right circle for a 3-1 Ducks lead.

Hiller made 16 saves in the third period, including several key stops while the Red Wings had the extra attacker on the ice, and Chipchura's empty-netter capped the scoring in the final seconds.

Game Notes

Both teams finished 0-for-4 on the power play...This halted a five-game win streak by Detroit against the Ducks...Perry returned to the lineup after he had missed four games with a leg laceration...The Wings are winless in five of their last seven games in Anaheim.
